| Touring a Hologram Exhibition Jonathan Ross ABSTRACT Art, Holography, Exhibitions, Museums, History, Education During 2008-2009, Jonathan Ross toured an exhibition entitled 'Holograms, the first 60 years' to four museums in the United Kingdom. This exhibition celebrated the 60th anniversary of Dennis Gabor's invention and was a survey of the different aspects of display holography that have developed in that period, designed to introduce the medium to a new audience. The paper will explain the origins of the exhibition in the Ross Collection and how contacts were developed with the museums in question. It will document the logistics involved in designing and touring an exhibition of holograms to a number of different venues. It will describe and illustrate the content of the exhibition, which comprised: • The 'Pre-history of Holography' - a display of stereoscopic viewers and images, anaglyphs and lenticulars • Holographic Principles - a wall panel describing how various types of holograms are made and a 7-minute video showing the making of a laser transmission hologram • An international selection of Art Holography • A Portrait Gallery • A group of holograms demonstrating the use of holography in Museum Displays. • A selection of commercially produced Display Holograms and Images Designed to Appeal to Children • Applications of Holography - Display cases containing examples of holography used in print and packaging, publishing, security, toys, clothes and novelty items • Holographic Merchandise for sale in the museums' gift-shops. The paper will conclude with an analysis of the response from museum curators and the public. |
