LFC-Holofacts Sheet

British-Hungarian Dennis Gabor discovered holography in 1944 and was award the Physics Nobel Prize in 1971.

Lake Forest College’s involvement in holography began in 1964.  Jeong, working with freshmen students Paul Rudolf and Arleigh Luckett, invented the 360 degree hologram in 1966.  Dennis Gabor hired Rudolf immediately upon his graduation from LFC.

Yashahiro Moriuchi, VP of Hitachi of Japan, recipient of 2008 honorary degree from LFC, was Jeong’s assistant after Rudolf.

Current applications of holograms:

  • Full color and full parallax computer generated motion holograms for displays
  • Security for credit cards, product authentification for paper currency, passports, etc.

  • Real time manipulations of microbes (called holographic optical tweezers) using multiple beams through transparent media such as walls of living cells.   These beams are created by a real-time hologram.

  • Free-space interconnects for wireless chip-to-chip communication.

  • High capacity information storage and fast data transfer

  • Optical computing using holograms as parts of electro-optical chips

  • Virtual keyboard for computers as seen through holographic glasses

  • Personal 3-D television using two-channel simulcast seen through holographic glasses

  • Deep field lensless holographic microscopy

  • Education:  teaching children how to make holograms introduces them to all the basic concepts of optical physics and information technology
